The game room included two ping-pong tables, a pool table and an indoor handball court. Dr. Avery Ashdown (PhD, ’24), faculty member in the department of Chemistry, was chosen as the first Housemaster. He was Housemaster for 24 years and was the first faculty resident in any of the dormitories at MIT. His enthusiasm for the undertaking, wise counsel, and tact contributed to the success of Graduate House. Dr. Ashdown himself lined up the first group of students – 46 in all.

Under Doc, the GHEC met dutifully in his apartment, much humbler than the present Suite, once a week or every other week, and discussed the placing of garbage cans in the hall or some such. All matters of substance were done the same as they had been for 20 years – nobody questioned that. The institute spent many months and some $80,000 enlarging the Housemaster suite to attract the proper distinguished MIT personality back from Suburbia. Their catch was Dr. Bitter of magnet fame, and his wife Kate. Dr. Bitter was a kind person but his wife was strong-willed and ran him and wanted to run the house. That was the seed of the great period of turmoil that followed.

“The events that come to mind seem mainly to revolve around food, but behind that lies the substance that really represents the quality of life of the House. Somehow, it was a period of remarkably good and open relationships and a growing sense of community among the students living there. Our history began in 1972 when the MIT administration announced that it was considering closing the Ashdown dining room because it was losing money. At that time there was a big kitchen behind the east wall of what is now called the ‘Hulsizer’ room and also storage and work space in the basement underneath it.

The Cherry Pie Society was also founded during Dr. Ashdown's tenure. The Society was so aptly named since the meetings would consist of a discussion of a non-technical topic of general interest over dinner followed by Doc’s favorite dessert, cherry pie. “When we started, in the fall of 1974, we followed the examples of our predecessors and invited 60 students at a time, every two weeks, for dinner in our apartment. After two semesters of doing that and getting to know the house better, we did some simple arithmetic and realized that with 450 residents, our dinners were offering each student two social events a year. In 1937, MIT acquired the Riverbank Court Hotel at 305 Memorial Drive. A leading proponent of the purchase, Dr. Ashdown supervised its renovation into a dormitory.

For the next two years AHEC focused on providing an orderly move from W1 (old Ashdown) to NW35 (new Ashdown). Ashdown House successfully transitioned from W1 to NW35 in August 2008. On September 19, 1938, the new Graduate House (Building W1) opened its doors to over 400 graduate residents and Dr. Ashdown continued as housemaster. The Student Progress Rating measures whether students at this school are making academic progress over time based on student growth data provided by the Department of Education. The Growth Rating was created using 2023 Student growth data from Arkansas Department of Education. This community has a One-Year Renewable License for MIT graduate students and Non-Renewable License for visitors, affiliates, postdocs, cross-registered students. The pressure to convert Ashdown into an undergraduate dorm continued. This was further increased by a desire to build another graduate dorm in the northwest part of campus, joining the Warehouse (opened 2001) and Sidney and Pacific (opened 2002) to create a large residential graduate community.

From the end of the Great Depression to the information age, Ashdown (Graduate) House has a long history as home for MIT graduate students, and many stories to tell. As the second graduate dorm established in the United States, Ashdown House was a pioneer in graduate student housing, interactions and culture. The following history, compiled over the years by Ashdown House residents, tells the story, shaped by the world outside as well as its constantly active and diverse society over the decades. The first faculty resident in any of the dormitories at MIT, Dr. Ashdown himself lined up the first group of students - 46 in all. Mrs. Bitter thought there was too much TV watching in the house and so the TV committee got the short end of the AHEC budget.
The House was Doc’s closest kin, and a change of title did not remove him from house affairs. The conflict between what Mrs. Bitter wanted and the way things were always done was just beneath the surface during the first year, with the committee in its usual passive role. Then during Wai Tang’s committee, Dr. Bitter suggested privately in the most diplomatic terms to Doc that it might be better if he didn’t attend every GHEC meeting. Doc was most hurt by this and didn’t attend a meeting for about a year. Mrs. Bitter role became more and more unacceptable under Wai’s committee. Random house residents were invited but not welcome at GHEC meetings in the Bitter Suite.

Games motivate both young and old to find creative solutions, practice new skills, and keep their brains active. Scouts who work on the Game Design merit badge will likely look at the games they play differently and with a new level of appreciation.
It is important to understand that the Scout is making a prototype. Scouts will learn about elements of gameplay, game analysis, thematic elements and intellectual property. The badge focuses on the concepts behind game design, not just video games.
They are engineers, piecing together the rules and systems that make the game tick. They are scientists, testing and tweaking to make sure the game is fun. They are dreamers, coming up with new and amazing experiences. And they are also teachers, helping players understand the rules.

Discuss the key skills they emphasize to their students and why those skills are essential for making games. What I love most about my game is how engaged everyone was during their turn.
I would watch silently as they read the instructions and started playing, jotting down any moments of confusion or frustration. These are the things players can use or control in the game. This can be anything from pieces on a board, to the amount of time you have, to clues you’ve collected. In summary, changing the rules of a game can have a big impact on how it’s played and how much fun people have. It’s a good way to see how important rules are in shaping the game’s experience. Double points for 3-pointers did make players focus on long shots, just as predicted.

Then, jot down the rules so everyone knows how to play, and list out the resources, like cards, tokens, or points. Maybe your game is a card game for two players where the goal is to collect certain combinations of cards, all set in a fantasy world with wizards and dragons. Either of these options will give you real-world insights into the game development process and can guide you on what skills and knowledge you’ll need to enter this exciting field. Another choice is to meet someone who teaches game development.
Designing your very own game is an exciting journey that lets you be the boss of how everything works. First, you’ll need to figure out the basics like what kind of game it is, who’s playing, what they’re trying to achieve, and what the game feels like. Many parent volunteers serve our Troop as Merit Badge Counselors (MBC).
Chartered on October 1st, 1920, Troop 8 has helped over 125 young adults achieve the highest rank in scouting, the Eagle. Countless young people have learned about camping, citizenship, hobbies, and the values that form the foundation for being leaders in their school, church, community and chosen vocation. Yes, working in a team is encouraged, but make sure each Scout contributes to the game’s design and development, and fulfills all the individual requirements.
It’s unfortunate that a place this consistently appealing isn’t packed to the gills every day of the week. If you’re looking for the energy that comes with a packed weeknight restaurant, however, Ritual disappoints—in that area alone. This restaurant deserves to be busy, full of beautiful, trendy socialites and their well-to-do companions. And on weekend nights, when the club’s line stretches down towards Hollywood Boulevard, it is. But on the night I went, my table was the only one in the restaurant until my second course arrived. By the time I paid the check, there were three other tables in the restaurant—two large parties and another couple.

Overall, although the proteins in our entrees were cooked exceptionally well, the flavors here missed the mark for us- the recurring sweetness was something that stuck with us well after leaving. Whether or not this was something we misunderstood from the menu descriptions or that we just did not craft a proper meal outright remains to be seen, but this one ended up being not quite what we expected. The meal's highlight was definitely the service, as our server was very attentive and gave many suggestions on what to order (we, admittedly, probably should've asked more questions about flavor here!). We had a long chat about the delicious-sounding dessert menu despite opting to miss it, and we found out that you can order desserts for takeout which is definitely on our list to try in the future.

The coconut shrimp skewers were subtle, not saccharine like the overly-breaded miniature shrimp that lesser restaurants deep fry and pass as coconut shrimp. These shrimp were lightly breaded, their crunch more like a delicate fritter than coconut shrimp. The final two components of the Ritual Sampler Platter alone are worth ordering the entire dish to get to eat. Teriyaki filet skewers are tender, cooked in a sweet and sour teriyaki sauce that warms the mouth like liquid candy. But the tempura squash blossoms are this platter’s crowning jewels. These savory, crunchy delights are filled with creamy ricotta cheese and porcini mushrooms.
The carrot flavor was interesting but overall, this drink was simply way too sweet for our palates. From the food and drinks to the decor, Herky believes Ritual House offers a high-end experience minus the stuffiness you’d expect from an upscale establishment. We were stuffed after these four dishes, but had to try The Holy Trinity of Cup Cakes, which brought this religious experience full circle. The dessert, also portioned for two guests, includes nine miniature cupcakes in red velvet, candied lemon, and chocolate chip overdose. Ritual is located on Cahuenga Blvd., just north of chaotic Hollywood Blvd. It is the pricier, hotter, more attractive cousin of its predecessor White Lotus. Ritual’s food and ambience will make you forget you’re in Hollywood, and its transformation into weekend Hollywood hotspot is a feat to make you forget about any other nightclub this side of La Brea. Lisa calls it a “sophisticated funhouse” that’s already a gathering spot for groups of women celebrating special events, conducting lunch meetings or having a happy hour drink. Ritual House will pop the cork on a champagne menu that will include flights and cocktails like Blushing Bellini with Stoli Peach, white peach puree, peach bitters, and topped with prosecco.
The site also includes Eddie V’s Prime Seafood, The Speckled Egg and Freshii, a casual grab-and-go establishment serving salads, bowls and juices. Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse will also open in the building next year. Unfortunately, we thought the Szechuan syrup made the chicken way too sweet for what we expected for a dinner entree. The spices felt a fair bit overshadowed by the syrup such that we thought the chicken should've been served over a waffle for brunch instead of an entree for dinner. In fact, we took leftovers home and had them on a biscuit for breakfast the following day, and in that context, it was much more enjoyable. We thought the menu descriptions of the food and drinks didn't align with what we thought we were ordering, namely in terms of the flavors and presentation.
Sweet peas dot the dish, and truffle oil reappears to round out the flavor. The excellent portion is friendly to both herbivores and omnivores; Pastore doesn’t hold back the flavor on what could potentially be a delicate dish. Through Ritual’s giant, heavy double doors, diners are transported into a Zen-like wonderland that plays supper club during the week and turns into Hollywood hotspot during the weekend. High ceilings, dim lighting, and an abundance of dark wood and candles set the mood immediately upon entry. Although it was early on a Thursday night and we announced that we had dinner reservations, a security guard asked to see proof of age, leaving no doubt that Ritual is both nightclub and restaurant. Kat, who was born in 1998 and works in social media, told BI she doesn't think it's likely young people will flood to Instagram.
Hawaiian Ahi Tuna “Poke” with fresh pineapple, organic cucumber, spicy soy sauce, and sesame wonton crisps is a delightful twist on the original. Served in a carved-out pineapple with an abundance of fruit, the dish is aesthetically pleasing, to say the least. Sliced avocado balances the spicy soy sauce well, and the crunch of the organic cucumber mixed with the spicy tuna poke is a most pleasing sensory experience. Although this dish does have some heat, the dance the spicy soy did on my tongue was pleasant, not like the fire-breathing, sweat-inducing heat of hot peppers. Chef Andrew Pastore’s Pacific Rim menu is so elegant, exotic, and beautifully presented, it’s a shame dishes aren’t delivered to tables by elephant.
The “Pittsburgh shines again” cocktail has Tito’s vodka, muddled grapes, fresh basil, fresh lemon and ginger ale. The “main ritual” features Jim Beam bourbon, fresh lemon and northwest berry syrup. Called “shareables” on the menu, the brûléed oranges have goat cheese and local microgreens. The fried green tomatoes are topped with green goddess dressing and pickled onion, and the tuna poke features sashimi-grade tuna and poke sauce.
We tried the Rye Not with Bulleit Rye, Aperol, passionfruit, lemon, and orange. For what we thought would be a spirit-forward drink, it was a little surprising that it was served over small ice cubes, and it was a little sweeter than we expected. We also tried the signature Ritual Margarita, with tequila, carrot juice, Cointreau, lime, agave, and a hibiscus salt rim.
